Great Learners Progression Map

“One day everyone will build the essential skills to succeed in life.”
At Hexham Middle School, we are proud to be part of the Skills Builder programme. Since moving into our new school site, we have embarked on a meaningful journey to sustainably embed Skills Builder into wider personal development provision and it is a key element of our careers curriculum. We are a Gold level Skills Builder School and work alongside the Skills Builder partnership, including action research projects and careers-related workshops. Take a moment to read our Gold Award case study available online here.
As a school, we believe in the value of developing the eight essential skills to unlock learning in the classroom, boost educational outcomes and to promote perseverance and self-belief, equipping our pupils for the next stage of their education and lives. Developing these essential skills in middle school will support our pupils as they think about their futures and careers and has been proven to boost wellbeing and life satisfaction. Take a moment to look at more information, including wider research, about Skills Builder online here. The Skills Builder framework for learning is life long. If you would like to discuss Skills Builder further and how it can support your child’s education, transition to high school and beyond, contact the school to speak to our Skills Leader, Mr Freeman-Myers (Assistant Headteacher for Personal Development).
We firmly believe in the approach that all children and young people should have fair and equal opportunities to develop these essential life skills and we make sure we provide this essential strand of our curriculum at HMS.
How do we provide our pupils with opportunities to develop the skills?
- Skills Builder Hub sessions in form time
- Skills Builder Days – whole school focus events to celebrate skill development
- Assembly Programme to promote the essential skills
- Skills Builder links identified in our extra-curricular programme
One of our curriculum drivers is ‘Great Learning’ and we have used the Skills Builder Hub to map the progression of the essential skills so that teachers, school staff and pupils know how the skills can be developed further.
