Last night the Year 7 teams were in action against Gosforth Junior High school in County Cup football action and netball matches.
Boys’ Football
In a game heavily affected by the light the year 7 boys started brightly but needed to rely on the defensive duties of Tom, George and Archie to propel an early onslaught of GJH pressure. The boys then started to grow in confidence as Robin and then Louis tested the opponent’s defence with a few mazy runs forward.
The deadlock was broken after a brilliant solo effort from skipper Ollie who drove forward from the half way line and slotted home the opener. Moments later though Gosforth got a free kick on the edge of the HMS box and if it wasn’t for a sensational save by Finlay at full stretch tipping onto the bar the scores would have been level.
The ever impressive Arthur broke down the right time and time again but just before the break his ball found Jack in space to smash home a second!
After half time Elliot asserted his presence at the back, sweeping well to stop Gosforth attacks. The returning Harrison commanded the back well making a series of good blocks.
Louis hit the post late on from a distance but sadly the game was cut short due to poor light.
Huge well done to the lads who move into the next round and a huge thanks to Gosforth for the game!
Final score: 2-0 (Ollie G 10; Jack T 22)
Player of the match: Jack T
Girls’ Netball
In what is only their second game together the Year 7 girls were fantastic. Phoebe and Martha were amazing, stepping in to provide some experience to the team! Co-captains Abby and Hannah showed glimpses of brilliance with quick hands and good movement. Anya was her usual energetic self, winning lots of turn overs.
In defence Grace was brilliant blocking a much taller opponent well throughout. Iris and Imogen were very impressive, always seeking the ball!
Although the girls lost 9.4 there were huge signs of improvement from last time. A massive thank you to Miss Hopper for her work with the girls on a Friday.
Final thanks go to Miss Downes who was a huge help tonight!
