The Year 8 girls’ rugby league team were in action last week in the Champions Cup first round. They played the first half of the tournament on Thursday at Seaton Sluice Middle School. The girls must play 6 matches in order to progress to the next stage and they got off to a great start!
A combination of skill, power and sheer determination saw HMS girls beat the only team to have beaten them in the last two years, Ponteland High School, 12-4 in the first game. A great start and confidence was now growing.
Churchill were up next and despite falling behind to a very early try HMS bounced back to record a hugely impressive 32-8 win.
Finally John Spence were the opposition and in a hard-hitting contest both teams exchanged some brilliant passages of play but the girls managed to come through in the end to take the match 12-8.
Three games and three wins leaves us joint top of the table. In 4 weeks’ time the girls play the second half of the competition with games against Churchill 2, Seaton Sluice and joint table-toppers Whytrigg Middle.
If the girls win those games they will qualify for the grand final and earn the opportunity to represent the North East of England.
