The Year 7 boys were in action in the finals of the county five-a-side. All the teams who were there were area champions.
Game 1 was against Gosforth who are a very powerful and pacy side who caused us problems from the start. Ben played a quick through ball to Sam who coolly slotted home for 1–0. Gosforth then finished well to grab 2 quick goals. This time Max and Sam linked up well to make it 2–2 after many HMS chances went narrowly wide. A quick counter saw us fall 3–2 behind but Sam smashed home from Cameron’s through ball for his hat-trick goal to make the final score 3–3.
Game 2 was against Cramlington who are county cup opponents next week. A great finish saw us fall a goal down early. This was a game of outstanding goalkeeping from both sides: first Archie then Max were denied brilliantly before James showed his class at the other end. Ollie battled well and ended up playing Max in who won a last-minute penalty. Cam stepped up and put it straight in the corner. 1–1 final score.
Game 3 against Churchill who had proved to be the early favourites to win. Churchill scored in the first minute to make it 1–0 and after that the game was neck and neck. James made 6 or 7 world-class saves when called upon but Ben was driving forward and Archie and Cameron were causing problems at the other end. Despite all our efforts we couldn’t find an equaliser. 0–1 final score.
Game 4. NCEA. Very tough opponents and HMS put in their best performance of the day. Max worked sensationally on the counter linking up well with Cam to create a few good chances. Archie proved troublesome up top before Ollie smashed home a great goal. 1–0 up. After great defending by the opponents a high press pushed us back and they got a goal to equalise. Ben provided good cover at the back and after a great save by James, HMS countered and won a penalty. Sam stepped up to make it 2–1 HMS.
Game 5 and St Mary’s were the opponents. Both teams started well but Sam got on the end of Cameron’s through ball to make it 1–0. We came up against a goalkeeper in form and chances came and went. We were made to pay for missed chances as St Mary’s got a couple of quick goals and later a third as we pushed for the equaliser. 1 –3 final score.
